TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) — The FDA said the vaccine is safe for children, now some pediatric offices are gearing up to administer the injections.
Tanque Verde Pediatrics plans to offer the vaccine to children once it is approved.
“We are very excited because for the very first time in 19 months we can play a small attack instead of defense against COVID-19,” said Dr. Sandy Herron.
In the past year and a half, Dr. Herron fitted in personal protective equipment and tested thousands of children in our community.
She said the positivity rate in her office is eight percent.
“We’ve seen how our children, especially this age group, five to one, are at the mercy of adults – adults getting their vaccinations, adults mandating masks or not. [and] adults bringing it to them. Then school started and they became more infected, more of a way of transferring to others,” said Dr. Herron.
dr. Herron said it’s not just COVID-19, but her young patients are also getting MIS-C.
In the past two days alone, she said there were ten COVID-positive children in the office.
Tanque Verde Pediatrics contacted a third of his patients to see who would be on board.
“We had a little more about 500 responses and 80% of our families with children ages five to 11 want this vaccine for their children,” said Dr. Herron.
For parents who have doubts about the vaccine, she said her office fully supports it and recommends it to their patients.
“The bottom line is that we would never recommend anything different for anyone else’s children than we would give ours,” she said.
